George Washington Birthday Cake Winners
George Washington Birthday Cake Winners

Oklahoma has been celebrating George Washington’s birthday all week!  The George Washington Ambassador visited West Field Elementary in Edmond on Tuesday.  The next day, Mount Vernon’s Director of Programs, Nancy Hayward, traveled with the ambassador to Britton Elementary for six presentations.   On Thursday the ambassador excitedly anticipated the arrival of the George Washington Birthday Cake finalists at the Oklahoma History Center.  These confectionary concoctions were selected from forty entries across the state.  The excitement grew as each of the beautifully embellished faux desserts vied for attention (against Wiley Post’s Winnie Mae) in the Devon Great Hall.  The “history expert” culinary judges had an excruciatingly hard time determining the winners of this event.  The two “Top Cake” awards were bestowed on Melissa Tilley’s class from Comanche in the 3rd through 5th category and Judi Jackson’s students at Ft. Cobb-Broxton in the 6th through 8th group.  All the finalists will receive a special DVD from Mount Vernon and their teachers were presented with a $30 gas card.  The winners will also receive a George Washington Birthday Party hosted by Martha Washington (Jan McClaren).  The festivities continued on Friday…

Thank You to the Original American Idol—George Washington

by jmcclaren

The following “Thank You” letters were created by Deji Dugger’s students from Moore Public Schools.  The students attended Colonial Day at the Capitol.  While in the Representatives’ Chamber the students listened to the Original American Idol—George Washington.  They also sang and danced with the George Washington Oklahoma Teaching Ambassador.

Pleasant Grove was More than Pleasant!

by jmcclaren

Pleasant Grove 4th through 8th graders greeted the George Washington Oklahoma Teaching Ambassador in their auditorium.  The students were very involved in learning about the first President and they asked some very interesting and thought-provoking questions.  A great time was had by all—including some of the teachers who showed us some of their “disco” moves!
